THOUGHTS ABOUT TEDDYBEARS
Lora Soling

Some of my inspiration comes from observing the body language of animals; how they communicate, the way they walk. Who is inside that cat body? What is that twinkle in a dog’s eye? Some inspiration also comes, like many other bear artists, from antique bears and other toys. What intrigues me about these elderly things is that they quietly carry bits and pieces of personal history along through time, some with dignity and patina, some aging less gracefully.

Each teddy bear is my own original design, made from German or English mohair. They have glass eyes and wool felt paws. Each has been carefully aged and handpainted. I want to contribute something distinctive that brings joy to someone. My simple purpose is to make people smile! I make only one of a kind bears and each one of them is lavished with love and attention.

Just about all of what my bears are wearing has been made specifically for that bear from vintage materials, and a few pieces are old doll's clothing that I've altered, renovated or re-invented to fit a teddy bear with a hump. If the description says custom or hand-made, that means Lora Did It.
